Sen. Frank Mrvan, D-Hammond, thought the proposal tried to do too much.
"We should pass the 1 percent cap on homeowners, and that should be it," he said. "Every time you give a break to someone" it ends up costing your schools and local governments.
There you have it. The Democrats think that preserving government spending is more important than your tax bill.
Democrats are trying to eliminate the tax caps for rental and commercial property. They are also trying to prevent the caps from being written into the constitution.

Buzz,
I am in Indy today for other meetings, and listening in on talk radio. All the talk down here is exactly what you're saying.
Mitch and the Republicans are trying to find a compromise that limits government spending. The Dems, Patrick Bauer and team, are standing in the way of all these efforts.
Interesting monologue: Superintendant of school system suggests that he won't have enough money to pay his teachers.
Republican rep asks, then how much money are you spending each year on debt service on the Taj Mahal's you built over the last 20 years?
This isn't about cutting teachers, this is about capping the type of frivolous and drunken spending that has Valparaiso spending $1 million on football bleachers.
The tax payers weren't complaining when they were planning these building projects.
Are people really so stupid to think they weren't going to have to pay for it.
The biggest problem is people aren't involved. If they were 1 of two things would happen...
1. everyone would be informed and know how much school debt they are accepting.
2. they would have beat these projects at remonstrances.
And remember...a VERY LARGE portion of the tax bill issue is due to Mitch cutting PTRC and homestead to balance the state budget.
BigReub, look at my last couple of posts. The city of East Chicago itself spends $1600 per person, not the schools.
The cities of North Lake County are the ones that are spending so damn much. The schools spend a lot, but if you look at my graphs, it is the cities that are causing the real problem.
So... maybe the schools are causing problems in some areas, but not in this case. Seeing as how most of the cuts are going to be felt in the North Lake County cities, your argument is almost irrelevant.
True, Buzz. However, much of the argument around the statehouse are the "taj mahals" that schools are building so I made that argument. Dalton used a radio interview (that I also heard) to make the same argument.
I don't know much about the spending in your area, but have to agree the numbers are extreme.
I would have to disagree that my argument is irrelevant. I don't argue with your numbers. However, I argue that Mitch's balanced budget caused a great deal of this problem. Was anyone throwing a fit before this year? Relatively speaking...no.
The current plan will save me roughly nun.nun dollars. It will, however, cost me in sales tax (remember it's a 17% increase).
Great post. I highlighted it here: http://www.housevictory08.com/victory_bloggers
