What are local Democrats fighting for?

Higher taxes and less freedom, generally:

Senior citizens earning less than $50,000 a year would be exempt from state income tax if House Bill 1256, sponsored by state Rep. Shelli VanDenburgh, D-Crown Point, became law.

College students would not have to pay sales tax on textbook purchases under House Bill 1357, sponsored by state Rep. Mara Candelaria Reardon, D-Munster. But state Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, would allow Lake County communities to impose a municipal sales tax under House Bill 1346.

State Rep. Dan Stevenson, D-Highland, created a process to recall elected or appointed officials in House Bill 1098. He also proposed in House Bill 1099 eliminating the requirement that a primary election voter publicly declare his or her party affiliation.

House Bill 1008, sponsored by state Rep. Chuck Moseley, D-Portage, creates incentives for manufacturers to open wind turbine factories in Indiana that would use American-made steel to produce turbine blades.

Employees in that factory, or at any Indiana business, could not be discriminated against in hiring based on their long-term unemployment status under House Bill 1161, sponsored by state Rep. Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City.

If state Rep. Earl Harris, D-East Chicago, could win passage of House Bill 1308, the state law capping Lake County's property tax levy as punishment for not imposing a county income tax would be repealed.

Even state Rep. Charlie Brown, D-Gary, was forced to abandon his own smoking ban proposal, House Bill 1063, and sign on as co-author to a Republican-sponsored plan, House Bill 1149, to keep the issue alive.

State Rep. Chet Dobis, D-Merrillville, also has co-sponsored legislation with House Republicans.

The smoking ban violates the property rights of business owners. Lowering taxes on seniors raises taxes on everybody else. Taxes should be as broad based as possible, with as few exemptions as possible, allowing rates to be as low as possible for a given amount of revenue.

I have always voted Republican, except when they are against the smoking ban. Most Republicans I know want a smoking ban like in Illinois or California. That's why I most always eat in resturants in Illinois. Wake up, people want this! Do you want to keep your job?

I think that, if people really want this, they'll go to smoke free businesses.

Why does this need to be a law? Why can't there be choice?

Liberals are pro choice when it comes to killing a child, not pro choice to businesses being smoking or non smoking.

Non-smokers don't have a choice! By the way, if you want to go to a smoke free business, you have to go to Illinois. Maybe non-smokers should boycott resturants that have smoking. Non-smokers are forced to breath in smoke along with childern because people are scared to bring it to business owners.

No one is making you go to a "smoking environment. Use your feet and avoid those businesses that offend you.

I am a non smoker and this should be left to the business owner to decide, not busybodies like yourself, Mrs. Kravitz.

Till your name is on the business and your footing the bills, mind your own business and stay away.

I'm so surprised that with the knowledge we have about smoking and health related issues, people (including non-smokers) choose to ignore them. Your right, if we don't want to breath in smoke, go elsewhere. That's hard pressed here in NWI. So the only choice is go to IL, which I hate to give them my business, but I do to keep my family from inhaling poison. We regulate almost everything about restaurants so customers and employees don't get sick, so why not keep them safe from carcinogens and cancer also. This is the one and only issue I'm with the Liberals on. By the way, who is Mrs. Kravitz?

There are many smoke-free establishments in Lake County. You do have a choice. Business owners should also have a choice, the businessman footed the bill to open his business should'nt he have the choice to decide if smoking is beneficial or harmful to his business?

The guy is right! Money over people, I think that you're missing the point here. You're worried about who's footing the bill. Well, with Obama care, looks like we are now.

Because you own a business, you're qualified to know if smoking is benificial to people? I understand what you're saying, but having a smoking ban in resturants will actually help businesses.

Other than fast food chains, there are very few and far between eating places that are smoke free in Lake County.

Liberals are wishy washy, they support smoking bans, but have no problem murdering babies. They should STOP KILLING BABIES or be pro choice about smoking!

If I follow your logic we need to outlaw automobiles because they are dangerous and the Co2 emmissions are hazardous to our health. We need to stop all sporting events because of the high arm fracture rate and concussions caused by contact. You need to stop drinking the Kool-Aid because the sugar content is fogging up your brain and it will lead to you becoming diabetic. Bring back prohibition because of the high cost of treating alcohol related problems. It is not about money its about liberty and making your own choices.

I've been watching this for the last couple of days now, and it looks like there are several good comments by a few people. The last person is a complete moron! You guys in Lake county have a lot of problems. "Liberty", what an idiot.

Anonymous said...

You are the moron. Why don't you ask the restaurants and bars on the Illinois side of our border how much extra income they've earned since the smoking ban went into effect in Illinois. At the same time take a look at the Indiana restaurants and bars along the border especially in the evenings and see how many of these vehicles are from Illinois and see what section they dine in and what bars they frequent. Why did the Illinois casinos go to the legislature to give them a smoking ban exemption? Your arguement was blasted out of the water and you think that I am an idiot? You Liberal. It's very easy to spend other people's money.

OK, we get it, it's all about money. Just because someone doesn't share your view mean that their a Liberal. So go smoke a cigarette and have a nice day.

Anonymous said...

No, you still don't get it. It is about freedom, individual choices and free will. And calling you a Liberal was a little nicer than you calling me a moron and idiot for not subscribing to your point of view.

Hey listen, you know that there is more than one Anonymous making comments here, right? I didn't call you an idiot or a moron, but now I think that you're an idiot and maybe a moron.
