Who is implementing the Lake County "Ethics" Committee?

Tom Dabertin?!?

Thomas Dabertin, county government's human resources director, said he will begin employee training sessions next month on accepting gifts and misusing the Internet or government property for personal gain, as well as the virtues of whistle-blowing.

As one Times commenter noted:

Is Mr. Dabertin, the same person making $89,000 from Hammond, working part time as the Mayor's Chief of Staff? And didn't Mayor McDermott give Mr. Dabertin a $140,000, casino money, for well earned legal work for the Hammond Boxing Club? And isn't Mr. Dabertin also a consultant to the 911 call center, at a cost of $110,000 a year. And isn't Mr. Dabertin running the Lake County's Human Resource Department at an annual contract of $130,000 a year?

You just can't make this shit up, folks. Nobody would believe you otherwise.

We need ethics training for Lake County voters. They're the ones who keep electing these corrupt Democrats and their cronies like Dabertin.

When Tom McDermott is thrown in the federal slammer, Tom Dabertin is going to be his cellmate. This is the guy that is directing "ethics" training in Lake County.

Am I to understand that you endorse the commenter’s remarks? And, if you do endorse the commenter’s remarks, do you limit your endorsement to the commenter’s right to pose questions or do you assert that the answer to each of the questions posed is affirmative? I could very well ask if a certain contractor makes $XX per year from BP and if that contractor was involved in the Kennedy assassination. While I may have cheaply grabbed attention, I really haven’t said anything of substance, have I?

From what I know, Tom Dabertin has the qualifications to provide this training and will do an excellent job. Perhaps amongst the questions your commenter could have posed would be the following:

Has Mr. Dabertin ever taught ethics business ethics at MBA and undergraduate levels?

Would not this experience make an individual worthy of consideration?

Perhaps your commenter would be willing to shed more light on the legal work Tom Dabertin performed for the Hammond Boxing Club. As for the remaining questions, I don’t know the answers to your commenter’s questions, but I do know that qualified people and businesses are highly valued and rarely does a qualified consultant or consulting business work for only one principal.

As for your statement accusing Mr. Dabertin and Mr. McDermott of committing criminal conduct, I’d like to your basis for such a loaded allegation, that is if you’ll stand behind it.

Of course I endorse the comment. Is he not all those things? Is he not paid those amounts?

What qualifications does Dabertin have, other than being an extremely generous campaign contributor to Tom McDermott Jr.? How has his work on, say, the 911 centers, held up?

The Tom McDermott/ Kevin Smith/ Tom Dabertin Industrial Complex plays fast and loose with the rules. Maybe it's the petty stuff that gets under my skin, like having your campaign account pay for St. John Boscoe fundraisers, where his kids go. Maybe it's even pettier than that, having the account pay for his Times subscription.

One day, these guys are going to slip up. They just have too many balls in the air, the connections are too blatant. One day someone is going to be in a position to expose it, and then it will all come crashing down.

McDermott Sr. was close to being indicted. I don't think Jr. learned anything from that, judging from the campaign finance reports.

Is there a reason you speak in questions and not in absolutes or affirmative statements? Is it because:

a. you, not Jim Carrey or Frank Gorshin, are the Riddler;

b. you don’t truly believe anything that any of your “sources” tell you;

c. you don’t believe anything you write; or

d. you aren’t willing to take a stand behind your words because you know you can’t support your questions/opinions couched as “facts”.

As for qualifications, I suggested several that would merit discussion and consideration amongst reasonable people, but that seems not sufficient for you. As for the launch into yet more unsubstantiated opinions and topics, I’ll attribute that to either a desire to change the subject you originally raised or to an inability to focus. In either event, you’re entitled to your opinion, but should fairly acknowledge that your opinion is based on the world as you conjure and hope it to be.

I think the comment was pretty definitive. It was also accurate. That's why I quoted it.

Dabertin is a no talent fool, and if his big buddy Tom McDermott wasn't so powerful, he would be sweeping streets or doing some other menial work that he is really qualified to do.
