Could this be the issue that finally defeats Frank Mrvan?
I think giving drivers licenses to illegals is insane. Why even have visas in that case, why not just have totally open borders? What government "service" is barred to you if you came here illegally if you can get a drivers license?
Once again, just like his statement that he hates Republicans, Mrvan seems to have a tin ear. This is what he actually said, "I personally can't see why anyone would vote against it".
So who is going to take the step of running against this guy? Dyer and Munster are in his district, I think it is very closely Democrat/ Republican, and he runs in 2014, the off year election. This is a winnable district for a Republican, albeit you can't expect the Republican Senate Committee to expend an iota of effort to win it (they think that a 37-13 majority is big enough).

Leading GOP strategists are already calling for changes in the party's immigration stance. It's not one of their core issues and the Latino population is the fasting growing voting block in the US. It boils down to a choice,IMO. Does the GOP want to concede winning national elections for the next 20 years to appease it's extremist wing? At the end of the day, immigration drives economic growth. Look at countries like Japan, where population is declining. Their economy is trashed.Indiana should absolutely grant the same kind of temporary DL's Illinois has approved. Licensing and insuring them makes our roads safer and creates growth and tax revenue.
I got no problem with immigrants in general, as long as they follow the rules and come here legally. I don't think anyone does.
The issue is the unregulated flood of illegals, with all their ancillary costs.
You know how to really make the roads safe? Get the illegals out of the country. It's pretty easy to do so: crack down on fraudulent social security numbers so they can't work, make people prove their kids are legal when they register for school so their kids can't get a free education, and when somebody gets pulled over without ID, make them prove that they're here legally or deport them. That would fix the problem in short order, mostly through "self deportation".
Like Gary Johnson said in his one and only Republican primary debate, we don't have an illegal immigration problem, we have a visa problem.
It's a documentation problem, as much as I would like to live in the land of fairy tales and gum drops open boarders is a bit too Libertarian for me. Open boarders is one of the area's along with free trade that, like socialism, only makes sense in a world where candy canes hang from trees.
What we really need with our boarder nation friends is something similar to Indiana's carry/conceal premit licensing process whereas they are simply a shall issue process so long as they are finger printed, at least, if not photographed too and are not criminals a visa would be issued.
Then again I'm just a crazy Libertarian leaning Republican.
Joel, I think that the "shall issue" visa for the 11 million undocumented future citizens is a great idea. It could be combined with another Libertarian idea, legalized prostitution and we could create an economic engine that could pay off our national debt in no time. Imagine some of the hottest women in the girl immigrating to the US to earn a couple hundred bucks an hour having sex with Americans! Talk about a win-win proposition. I think it's great we see eye to eye on some things!
