This is a really interesting article on Hidaya Pendleton's neighborhood.
There was a surveillance video showing kids running away from the shooting, and it showed the neighborhood in the background. It was full of graystones and the type of high end new construction you see in nice Chicago neighborhoods.
It turns out that the neighborhood is Kenwood, the same one that Obama's home is in. It is just north of the Museum of Science and Industry, just off Lake Shore Drive. Since Chicago knocked down the public housing, the neighborhood has been gentrifying.
But what I found most interesting in the article is that it is the children of the newcomers that are joining the gangs. Middle class black teens find the gangs irresistible.
This is something I have noticed before, in my own life. The biggest thugs are African American middle class kids who are thug wannabees. It is a strange situation. Criminality is for some reason seen as authentic.
If it turns out that the murderers were middle class, from that neighborhood, I won't be surprised.

Egads! I thought gangs were the result of economic oppression and the lack of honest work, but once a group advances, it'll leave thug life behind. Like the Cosa nostra and the Irish mobs like the Westies were supposed to fade away once Sicilians and Irishmen got into blue and white collar jobs. Oh, progressives lied to us about that. I guess what's true is that gangs are the result of people allowing gangs to be, regardless of income. And the need of an organization to run illegal activities like drugs, prostitution, and gambling (and if smokes and guns get outlawed, those, too).
Silly thugs. All they had to do was join the Democrat Party, and they could rob with impunity. How many did the perp walk in the last couple of decades? And that's just the ones dumb enough to get caught, to be a blip on the radar by being too avaricious.
I tell you who I fear. The Swedish mob. Never heard of them? Exactly my point. Everyone else got movies made after them, but there's no Scarface or Godfather about the Lutefisk Brigade. Stealth ninjas, the whole lot of them.
The mind set of collectivism and what it always degrades too.
Another thing I've been thinking about, African American LEGAL gun ownership is quite low (probably because so many live in jurisdictions like Chicago, where they are illegal), yet African Americans kill and are being killed using guns far in excess of their proportion of the population.
America doesn't have a gun problem, African Americans do. It is not unrelated to the gang problem, which is not unrelated to people refusing to take responsibility for themselves and their own children.
